Many first time visitors to the Biblioteca and even some of our existing members are surprised when they discover the library has more to offer then just a spectacular and vast collection of books.

Children enjoying art classes at the Biblioteca Children enjoying art classes at the Biblioteca The Biblioteca, which operates as a privately funded, nonprofit charity in Mexico, has already gained a reputation for being one of the finest bilingual libraries in Latin American and is now gaining recognition for the extensive array of daily and weekly activities it hosts.

The activities are divided into 3 categories, one for youth and teens, one for adults and the other for events and celebrations. The events range from concerts, talks and lectures to seminars, live theater, movie showings, exhibitions and workshops.

The number of daily events the library hosts daily varies from 6 to 8 in our low season to over 8 a day in our high seasons during the months of January to March and July to October.

The activities are presented in different ar eas of the library and include the Teatro Santa Ana, Sala Quetzal, the library’s main patio, classrooms on the upper terrace and Café Santa Ana.

The Biblioteca’s youth and teen programs receive special emphasis and on any week day afternoon  you can see the library full of kids attending the events and workshops.

A sample of the daily and weekly free youth and teen programs and workshops the Biblioteca sponsors: 
  •  Science club

  • Computer classes
  • Reading circles
  • Storytelling with an emphasis on the preservation of culture and tradition
  • Movies
  • English as a second language classes                                                              
  • Piano classes
  • Guitar classes
  • Pre-Hispanic music class
  • Choir practice
  • Theatre
  • Handcrafts and  jewelry making
  • Painting and drawing
  • Volunteer teachers to help out with homework
  • During the summer and holidays there are free day camps
The Biblioteca also offers a wide variety of events, programs and workshops for the local adult community and the many tourists that visit San Miguel de Allende every year.

A sample of the Biblioteca’s Daily and Weekly events, workshops and activities:
  • House and Garden Tour (Every Sunday)
  • Talks, lectures and seminars by local and international lecturers on a wide variety of topics including; Pre-Hispanic History, Environment, Health, Arts and Culture, Economics, Tourism, Civil History
  • Live Theatre performed by several local, national and international companies
  • Free conversation exchange in English, Spanish and French.
  • Movies in a wide range of genres including; Documentaries, Independent and Foreign Features, Drama, Comedy, and Local Productions. There are times when we are fortunate to have a presentation by the producers of the film.
  • Choir practice
  • Concerts including; Harp, Guitar, Piano, Classical music recitals, Choir presentations
  • Film festivals local and international.
  • Dance shows; African, Flamenco, Belly dance, Classical
In addition to the numerous programs the Biblioteca also hosts and sponsors several fairs and exhibitions during the year. As well the library also offers meeting and lecture space for many of the Non Profit groups in San Miguel de Allende.

Sample of Fairs and Exhibitions:

  • Green Week. A series of demonstrations and lectures about environment and small organic producers
  • FELISMA. A local book fair organized by the Library to encourage and promote reading and culture
  • San Miguel Volunteer Fair sponsor by the San Miguel Project
  • Patio del Arte, art fair organized monthly by the library
  • Fiestas and celebrations for national holiday including the Day of the Dead, Independence Day, Easter and Christmas

  children reading at the biblioteca children reading at the biblioteca As one can see the activities at the library are numerous and even though the Biblioteca has salaried employees to oversee the operations of the library we could not could not accomplish all of our programs without our amazing volunteers. The volunteers have been the life blood of the library’s inception and this still holds true today.  The library currently has 65 volunteers who give their gift of time and there are many who have been with the library for years.

Financial support for the Biblioteca

Many visitors to the library and some of the San Miguel community are not aware the Biblioteca operates as a non profit facility and receives no government funding. The library has thrived and grown for the past 55 years through the generous gift of time and money by members of the community, and as is still the case, relies on the continued financial support of the people in San Miguel de Allende.
