Sergio Basurto plays masterfully, achieving a perfect harmony between technique and emotion, reconciling the voices of the past that emerge from the harp made of timbó wood, allowing Basurto to create the intense passion of Latin American music.

Flamenco is a style of singing attributed to the gypsies of southern Spain and Andalusia. It has developed from a mixture of style and musical forms from the various cultures that exist in this region—Islamic, Jewish, Indo-Pakistani, Byzantine, Roman, Greek, Celtic, and African cultures.

A special thanks to Mrs. Cleo Kamelhar for the use of her husband, Murray Kamelhar’s History of Mexico documentary.

Using the voices of four actors and 334 slides, the personalities, artists, and events from the Olmecs to the present come alive in the History of Mexico.

The heroic Mexican people survived their victories and defeats triumphantly with overwhelming odds through tragedy and determination. The History of Mexico covers a period of more than three millennia. First populated more than 13,000 years ago, the territory had complex indigenous civilizations before being conquered by the Spanish in the 16th century. One important aspect of Mesoamerican civilization was their development of a form of writing, proving that Mexico’s written history stretches back hundreds of years before the arrival of the Spaniards.

The performance is great and the music is thrilling. The overture is considered one of the most exciting pieces of operatic music, and the “Might of Rome” sequence keeps that feeling. In addition to the superb dancing by the Bolshoi Ballet, the acting is very moving.
